Blossoming patterns! - summer exhibition

15.6.-15.8.2021

Florals from the early 1900s to the 1980s

In its summer exhibition Fossa Museum Pattern Centre displays one of the most common patterns in the history of printed textiles — florals!

The idea for a summer exhibition came to light when a forgotten collection of floral designs was found within the textile archive. The designs came from different decades. As a result, the Forssa Museum decided to invite textile and pattern designer Tanja Valta to curate the coming exhibition. From the patterns found, Valta chose 10 patterns that formed the core of the exhibition. As a whole, the exhibition showcases florals in textile samples, printed fabrics and hand-drawn sketches by textile designers. These designers include Arja Mattila, Aino Kauranen, Helena Kaulio-Turkki, Pirkko Hammarberg, Mirja Tissari, Katri Mattila, Aini Vaari, Clara Nordfors and Kirsti Rantanen to name a few.

The Forssa Cotton Mill was founded in 1847. In 1861 the Forssa Ltd. was the first company in Finland to start the production of printed textiles. In 1934 two textile companies Forssa Ltd. and Finlayson merged, and Finland’s largest fabric printing factory continued its operations under the name Finlayson-Forssa. In 1951 the company established a pattern design studio in Forssa and for nearly 60 years Forssa was the only producer of printed textiles in Finland. Production stopped in Forssa in 2009.

The Pattern Centre preserves and presents an extensive collection of industrial textiles, including the comprehensive history of Finnish printed fabric. The collection includes samples of printed fabrics dating back to the 1860s and original designs and sketches from between the 1940s and the 1990s.

The Pattern Centre will open its new permanent exhibition to the public in the fall of 2021. This summer exhibition will turn over a new leaf in the history of Finnish printed fabric.

The exhibition is open 15.6. - 15.8.2021
